Ian A Anderson: the roots of a folk publishing triumph
Your favourite Richard Thompson song? Choose from more than 70

Favourite Richard Thompson songs, yours and ours: an unscientific poll

NB  the ‘free’ poll was hardly free at all. 25 votes cast and the limit was reached. Thanks to subscribers of relevant Facebook groups, we still attracted a large volume of votes. See the results at https://www.salutlive.com/2025/02/your-favourite-richard-thompson-song-choose-from-60.html

Colin Randall writes: "best of" lists. Not everyone likes them, some doubtless loathe 'em. I have mixed thoughts, sometimes finding them useful, sometimes irritating.

However, when it comes to music, I do like the reminders they give of songs or tunes or albums stored away in the mind but not often enough taken out, dusted off and given another hearing.

And for all those mixed feelings, I have been meaning to get around to this for a couple of years, an invitation to readers to nominate their favourite Richard Thompson songs whether solo, with Linda, in Fairport, in the company of others. We nowadays attracts enough readers to make the exercise  worthwhile.

People will have fixed views on this so I won't waste time and space setting out why this song, why that one, why not those.

Let's just make it as unscientific a poll as can be imagined. And yes, opinions change over time so I may seem to contradict previously expressed thoughts when presenting my selection.

If you take part, feel free to add your own choices if these are not already listed by me.

My own group of five songs is not in any particular order. Like most people, I have my own "favourite of favourite" but will hold fire on that until it's time to publish results. By all means add comments below if you need more space than just a line to enter your choice.

The closing date is not set in stone but will depend on response.

My list -  now removed by the poll providers - was:

 Beeswing

Dimming of the Day

1952 Vincent Black Lightning

From Galway to Graceland

Meet on the Ledge

And here is a classic clip of Richard and Linda live, singing one of my own five selections, Dimming of the Day
