I shall let this choice from 2011 stand by itself and speak for itself in the new Song of the Day Revisited series ...

Red Indians, as they were called in insulting innocence, formed a part of every childhood of my generation. They were on our televisions several times a week and in the comics we bought. Always portrayed as primitive baddies up against the noble cowboy goodies.

All so much tosh.

Has any singer more powerfully illustrated the plight of what we later grew to know as Native Americans than Buffy Sainte-Marie? She was convincing in almost all she did, but this song stopped me in my tracks.

I was very pleased with this entry in the original procession of Song of the Day choices and am delighted to repeat it for the Revisited series. No reason to change a single word (except for one typo I noticed) ...

Jez Lowe is the latest up in this series of Song of the Day Revisited, retracing and in some cases remaking steps from the original exercise in 2011. This, more or less, is how I introduced him then:

Martin Simpson is a guitarist's guitarist. He also writes outstanding songs and delivers them in a way that is entirely his own but can send shivers down any discerning person's spine. This is the choice I made, and the words I used to introduce it, back when the Song of the Day series was young ...

We can all forget 2007, when Dervish finished, er, last in the Eurovision Song Contest. Personally I'd regard that as an honour and regret only taking part in the wretched thing in the first place.

Another choice from Pete Sixsmith, but one he made when the original Song of the Day series appeared, as Damien Dempsey and a tasty slice of Dublin folk. The new Song of the Day Revisited series will now take another weekend off, hoping for the best for Sunderland at Liverpool, and resume on Sunday or Monday ...
