A quick note to assure Salut! Live currently small band of readers that I am aware of the sad news of Liam Clancy's death.
The Clancy Brothers were an important part of my folk education and I will always be immensely grateful to them for introducing me to Irish music. Now, all four are gone.
One short obituary I read said the Clancys "confounded the stereotype of Irish folk music as essentially depressing".
That reminded me of G K Chesterton's words:
For the great Gaels of Ireland
Are the men that God made mad
For all their wars are merry
And all their songs are sad
Two enormous over-simplifications, but I can see what both writers meant.
Salut! Live shall return to the subject of Liam Clancy's life and death.
